Call for Submissions: Paint the Junction 2019

Inviting people to paint the Junction during the 8th Annual Junction Summer Solstice Festival on Saturday, June 22nd 2019 and then to participate in ARTiculations Summer 2019 Group Exhibition.

Exhibition to follow July-August 2019. Dates to be confirmed shortly.

Online registration closes June 20th. In-store registration available on June 21st and 22nd.

Registration Fees:

ADULT: $25 + hst until June 21, 2019. $30 + hst as of June 22,2019.

YOUTH & SENIORS (under 18 and over 65): $20 + hst until June 21, 2019. $25 + hst as of June 22, 2019.

$15 + hst for additional submissions )up to 3 works total)

Registration fees are non-refundable, no exceptions. Please ensure you can participate on June 20th between 1-7pm.

Registered participants will be given a 25% off purchase of a painting/drawing support for use in the competition. This can be redeemed between June 13-20, 2019 with proof of registration.

Michelle Peraza's recent body of work 'Patria Potestas' explores themes of ethnicity, origins, culture, tradition, skin colour, value systems, customs, identity, migration, integration, and familial hierarchy and bonds that raise vital questions. Large-scale portraiture is the catalyst allowing expression of these themes. Peraza chooses to paint individuals close to herself; people often ignored and unseen in the history of the painted portrait, particularly the Latino race/ethnicity. Matte black gesso creates a foundation of intensity and somberness to construct a version of the individual through a meticulous point system and linear comprehension of the face. High-realism allows the character, ethos, psychology, identity and appearance of the person to manifest. Large-scale provides a status as well as time for acknowledgment given the individuals frequent invisibility. The individuals Peraza chooses to paint are everyday people. They are immigrants. They are Canadian. They have stories and struggles. They provide consideration of their humanity, the artist's own humanity, our places in the world, and an interpretation of the face through paint.

The Thesis Award Show is a collaboration between ARTiculations, Graven Feather Studio and Akin Collective in support of graduating post secondary students. A call was sent out across the Province for applications in search of students demonstrating a coherent body of work unique in both concept and execution. Overwhelmed by the response, we extend a huge thank you to all of the applicants and congratulate this year's winner, Michelle Peraza. In addition to a solo exhibition Michelle will receive studio credit with Akin Collective as part of the award.

2018 RBC Canadian Painting Competition

Deadline: May 1, 2018. Finalists announced on June 27, 2018.

Celebrating Canadian talent and diversity, the 2018 RBC Canadian Painting Competition has just announced its call for submissions for it's 20th anniversary year. This year the competition is awarding an additional grand prize: a residency a the renowned Banff Centre for the Arts.

Former Akin member, Ambera Hellmann took home the grand prize for the 2017 competition. Currently based in Berlin, Hellmann's work continues to explore both formal and thematic elements, creating their own fragmented timeline.

2014 RBC Canadian Painting Competition Now Open

The 2014 RBC Canadian Painting Competition is now open and submissions will be accepted until 5 pm (EST), May 6, 2014. The 15 finalists will be announcedJune 14, 2014 and the winners October 1, 2014 at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts in Montreal.
