BEES (& the Birds) at Graven Feather Gallery

May 16, 2016 by Jen Pilles in Event

BEES (& the Birds) is a salon style art show to raise funds and awareness for our bee friends. A group of 38 artists coming together to use their art to help the bees including Jen Pilles of Akin Lansdowne.

The second annual show is once again at Graven Feather Gallery. The show runs from May 18 to 29, 2016 and the OPENING Reception will be held on Thursday, May 19 from 6 to 9 p.m.

Each of the artists participating in the show want to make a difference and help the bees. The works are bee inspired pieces that explore the role of this alchemist insect in our world.

These artists felt their work could play a big role in raising awareness and money - offering solutions for individuals - for our community - and for our world.

That's why 10% of all show proceeds - including sales - will go to the David Suzuki Foundation's efforts to save the bees.

Organized by artist Christine Pensa (Art That Moves) and Erin Candela and Pam Lobb (Graven Feather) the show features painting, prints, drawings, and photographs on the theme or bees and other pollinators.

Cloth Dripping, Solo Exhibition by Mary Grisey at Xpace Cultural Centre

March 14, 2016 by Jen Pilles in Event

Opening Reception: Friday, March 18, 2016 7-10pm
Location: Xpace Cultural Centre, 303 Lansdowne Avenue, Unit 2, Toronto
Exhibition dates: March 18-April 30, 2016

“…cloth dripping…” (Sappho, fragment 119).

Sappho was an ancient poet whose words were meant to be sung. Cloth Dripping weaves together sculptural and sonic elements inspired by fragments of Sappho’s poetry to create a continuous fabric of a multi-sensorial environment. Ruinous forms of terra cotta structures will be situated among the weavings with traces of fingerprints, gestures and lost scripts. In this exhibition, the audience is welcomed into a liminal space where traces of the past echo the fragments of her poems and the ruinous materiality of Grisey’s sculptural work.

PROSPECTOR Solo Exhibition by Sara Pearson at Project Gallery

March 14, 2016 by Jen Pilles in Event

Opening Reception: Thursday March 17, 6-9pm
Location: Project Gallery, 1109 Queen Street East, Toronto

Exhibition Dates: March 17 - April 3, 2016

The paintings and sculptures in PROSPECTOR, inspired by geological and gemmological formations, remind us of the strange and sublime beauty of nature. Gemstones, as coveted objects, present a complicated relationship between the natural world and us; As we hunt, collect and refine them, they become instilled with human values. In this body of work, Sara Pearson deconstructs and reinterprets their forms, removing facets and breaking stones into abstract shards, highlighting internal depths and building new structure. By pulling apart our vision of the perfect gem, she removes preconceived notions attached to it and focuses us on its extraordinariness. Pearson navigates this course through her early relationship to these materials; Growing up in her father’s jewellery studio instilled a sense of wonder in the presence of these otherworldly objects. She continues to live in awe of them, relating her art practice to that of an explorer, a treasure hunter.

Pearson chooses subjects and materials for their relationship to the natural world, using the optical phenomena that exist within cut gemstones to inspire her oil paintings; bronze, copper, marble, and terra-skin paper made from stone are some of the materials that form her sculptures and installations. Working primarily with “analogue” methods, she plays with the dichotomy of traditional process in an increasingly digital world, pushing abstraction while honouring the process of mimesis.

Sara Pearson is a Toronto based artist who graduated with a BFA from the Ontario College of Art and Design University.
