STEPS: Taxes for Artists Free Workshop

  • REMOTE Gallery 568 Richmond Street West Toronto, ON, M5V 1Y9 Canada (map)

This workshop aims to lessen the stress of tax season by unpacking some of the mystery and myths associated with taxing self-employed artists and creatives. Learn the basics of taxation and required recordkeeping, plus practical tips on how to stay organized from a Chartered Professional Accountant whether you have some or no experience filing. There will be lots of opportunity for questions and discussion. Topics and questions to cover include:

  • When does an artist have to pay income tax on income earned?

  • When does an artist have to bill Harmonized Sales Tax (HST)?

  • How do you calculate taxable income?

  • Revenue: What must you include in revenue and when must it be included?

  • Expenses: What is deductible?

  • Bookkeeping: What is and isn’t required? How long do you have to keep records?

All are welcome, space is limited! Please register in advance.

About the Facilitator: Phil Cowperthwaite is a partner of Cowperthwaite Mehta, a ten-person firm of Chartered Professional Accountants in Toronto. Since 1986 he has been assisting clients with preparation of personal tax returns, many of whom are in the arts and other creative fields. Over the years Phil has spoken on the topic of personal tax return preparation and financial planning to groups including writers, artists and childcare providers drawing on his day-to-day experience. This presentation to artists will focus on when income from artistic efforts must be declared, how taxable income is calculated, some of the basic rules around HST and will explore some practical ways to get it all done without going tilt.
