Vtape Call for Proposals

CALL FOR PROPOSALS
The Curatorial Incubator, v.13 – The Job Of Life

image

Work used to be a place we went to; now it is just as likely to come to us. This year, The Curatorial Incubator, v.13 – The Job Of Life seeks curatorial approaches that will help us see labour itself with fresh eyes. Banal or exhilarating, fully public or deeply domestic, work is all around us. Craft a program that reveals your take on The Job Of Life.

Participants in The Curatorial Incubator, v.13 will have an opportunity to hone their curatorial skills in the media arts in a number of important ways: attending specialized workshops conducted by arts professionals; conducting independent research using the rich resources available through Vtape; writing a curatorial essay for their program of selected titles, with invaluable editorial assistance provided by an arts professional; and, finally, presenting their curated program to the public.

If your proposal is selected for production, you will receive fees for both curating and writing and a budget to cover the screening fees for the titles that are included in your program.

Research phase (July - August) includes:
*workshops conducted by established curators, artists and arts professionals specializing in media arts,
*free access to the vast research facilities on site at Vtape, with over 4000 titles by 800+ artists and over 2500 articles on video art, and
*extensive access to the Vtape on-line preview resource available only to curators and     authorized researchers.

Presentation phase (January – March 2016) includes:
*an exhibition of all the curated programs with an introduction by the curator, and
*a fully illustrated catalogue of all the programs with curatorial essays.

SUBMISSION DEADLINE: FRIDAY MAY 22, 4:00PM

Proposals must include:
>>an up-to-date c.v.;
>>a statement of intention (1 page in total) that outlines your interest in video and media artwork and why you want to be part of The Curatorial Incubator, v.13 – The Job of Life.
>>NOTE: your statement of intention does NOT have to include a list of titles you would include. Rather it should try to clarify your overall area of interest. You will have lots of time to do your research to find the titles you want to include if you are selected for this program.
>>examples of critical writing your have done (published or non-published)
>>examples of any curatorial or organizational work you have done

OTHER REQUIRED INFORMATION TO ACCOMPANY PROPOSALS
>>indicate your availability for workshops August 6 (evening) and/or August 9-10, 2014, (days)
>>NOTE: If you are from outside of Toronto, please indicate how you would cover the costs of your travel to the workshops (to be held over 1 weekend) and some additional time for on-site research at Vtape.

And don’t worry; you won’t be held to your original proposal but keep in mind that the jury will need to get an idea of what kind of work you are going to be searching for. Surprises are to be expected along the way. That’s what research is all about.

CALL FOR PROPOSALS: City of Toronto "Outside the Box" (Hand-painted Traffic Signal Boxes) Project

Deadline: Friday, May 8th, 2015, 5 pm

Please see full application guidelines (including details of confidentiality and copyright) on the website:www.toronto.ca/streetart/outsidethebox

ABOUT THE PROJECT

The City of Toronto invites local artists to submit proposals to create works of art on City traffic signal boxes throughout Toronto. There are over 2,200 traffic signal boxes located across Toronto. These boxes are often covered with posters and are a prime target for graffiti vandalism.

The Outside the Box public art initiative helps to create a vibrant, inclusive and interesting urban environment, reduces the impact of graffiti vandalism and postering, helps to beautify City infrastructure and streets, and supports local and emerging artists. Successful proposals will be innovative in design, counteract graffiti vandalism and contribute to a sense of community identity and pride.

This project is implemented by StreetARToronto, part of the City of Toronto's Transportation Services Division. Since the project's launch in 2013, 56 boxes have been hand-painted by local artists and transformed into works of art.

ARTIST FEE

The artist fee paid will be a $500 honorarium (including HST) for each completed traffic signal box.

LOCATION OF TRAFFIC SIGNAL BOXES

For 2015, Outside the Box aims to have 64 traffic signal boxes hand-painted by local artists.

14 of these boxes will be located within the Downtown Yonge Business Improvement Area, as part of a new pilot partnership project to increase the number of painted traffic signal boxes across the city.

A List of Locations on the website shows the locations of the boxes to be painted this year. If artists are interested in painting a particular box from the list, they should mention this in their application and describe how their design fosters a sense of identity for that specific location.

Please note that there is no guarantee that artists will be given their preferred location. The list of locations, as well as the total number of boxes to be painted, is subject to change at any time.

PAINTING WEEKS

For 2015, painting must take place in one of the two specified painting weeks:
  • WEEK 1: June 22-26, 2015
  • WEEK 2: August 17-21, 2015
A single traffic signal box generally takes two days to complete but is dependent on the intricacy of the design and other variables.

Artists must specify in their application when they will be available to paint. In some cases, depending on box location, some flexibility in painting dates may be required.

APPLICATION & DESIGN CRITERIA

  • Artist applicants must reside in the City of Toronto.
  • Use the template provided on the website (www.toronto.ca/streetart/outsidethebox) to propose your design concept(s). Be aware that some changes to the design may be required to accommodate site requirements. Designs must include all visible sides of the traffic signal box, unless where specified by the project team or on the list of box locations.
  • When designing the artwork, artists are encouraged to think of the context of the area and the city as a whole.
  • Designs must not contain:
    • any representations of traffic lights, signs or signals
    • advertisement or promotion for any business, product or viewpoint
    • vulgar, profane, offensive, or insensitive images or writing
    • any breach of intellectual property, trademarks, brands, images of illegal activity or involve the attachment of any object(s) to the box
  • Finished artwork will be in the public domain and therefore may be vandalized. Although the City protects the artwork with a graffiti-resistant clear coat, it cannot guarantee that vandalized traffic signal boxes will be repaired to their original state. Artists should understand that the boxes are live infrastructure that may need repair or replacement in future. The City cannot guarantee how long each traffic signal box will be in use. Artists must accept the risk that their artwork may be damaged, altered or removed at any time.
  • All designs will be subjected to City of Toronto review and approval.
  • Artist signature and website cannot occupy more than ¼ of the base unit

HOW TO APPLY

Artists must provide a completed application form (available on the website) and all attachments requested on the application form. The deadline for applications is Friday May 8, at 5 pm.

Artists may submit more than one design proposal along with a statement for each design. No artist will be selected for more than 2 traffic signal boxes per year.

Do not send any materials not specifically requested (i.e. transparencies, DVDs/videos, etc.). If sent, they will not be reviewed by the jury. Submissions will not be returned.

PLEASE EMAIL SUBMISSIONS TO streetart@toronto.ca or MAIL HARD-COPY SUBMISSIONS TO:

Program Manager, Outside the Box
StreetARToronto (StART)
City Hall, East Tower, 23rd Floor
100 Queen St. West
Toronto, M5H 2N2

NOTE: The City of Toronto assumes no responsibility for lost or damaged submissions. Application contents will not be returned. The City reserves the right to discontinue this call at any time.

ARTIST SELECTION AND PAINTING PROCESS
  • Applications must be received by Friday, May 8th, 2015, at 5 pm.
  • Applications will be reviewed by a jury composed of staff and external jurors. References will be checked.
  • Selected artists will be notified during the week of May 25th, 2015. They will be provided with their traffic signal box location and will be required to sign a service contract with the City of Toronto.
  • Painting must take place on WEEK 1 (June 22-28) or WEEK 2 (August 17-21), as specified in the artist's application (some flexibility may be required). Artists will receive information about where they can pick up their protective safety equipment in advance of their painting week.
  • Once painting is completed, boxes will be protected with a graffiti-resistant clear coat. Artists must accept the risk that their artwork may be damaged, altered or removed at any time after completion.

VSVSVS Summer Residency Program

Open Call: Summer Residency Program 2015

We are quintuply pleased to re-announce the VSVSVS Summer Residency program for its fifth summer!
Information:
Our annual residency program will be held at the VSVSVS warehouse over the summer of 2015. We will work with the selected artist(s) to determine exact dates for the residency within the months of August and September. We are looking specifically for dedicated artists to produce some cool shit while making a valuable contribution to our collective environment. The residency is intended for experimentation, research, and production and favours an open-endedness in approach.

The residency is offered to any practicing artist(s) in any media from anywhere in Canada  outside of Toronto (groups or collectives are also considered). The length of the residency is negotiable ranging anywhere from one week to two months, depending on the wants and needs of the artist(s). The artist's stay will culminate in a show or event (or workshop, or screening, or performance, or whateva...) at the VSVSVS Gallery. The residency provides 24 hour access to the 14 ft. x 20 ft VSVSVS Gallery which will serve as studio space and the exhibition space, as well as access to the fully equipped woodshop and our developing 3d imaging and printing suite. It is mandatory that the artist utilize the space: you gotta be there or we will be sad and miss you.   Studio visits with other local artists, curators and VSVSVS members are strongly encouraged (we love an open dialogue). We are pleased to be able to offer exhibition and travel assistance as well as accommodations (if you can handle living with all of us) at the VSVSVS warehouse. Guess what else? We are paying artist fees and transportation.
VSVSVS will help with promotion and documentation of the residency program and the subsequent exhibition/event, etc. We are super excited to facilitate selected artist(s) with any pursuit/event coordination/writing/exploration.
Project proposals do not have to include a specific end-point. Actually, we think it's important that the experience of being here can help guide the work, so some open-ended-ness is encouraged.
If you’re interested, send us some stuff!
For almost the exact same information on our website go HERE.
For past residents go HERE, HERE, HERE, HERE, HERE, and HERE.

Community News:

Ryerson Image Centre Symposium
Photography Historians: A New Generation? highlights the most current research in the history of photography, bringing emerging scholars from universities worldwide to speak about their areas of study, their methods and their findings. This rising group of young photo-historians will engage in dialogue with prominent academics, revealing how contemporary historical inquiry sits within--and departs from--established traditions. The Symposium is organized by the Ryerson Image Centre with support from Ryerson University's School of Image Arts.

The Symposium is free to attend, and takes place March 26-28 at Ryerson University. For more information, visit the Ryerson website.

CONTACT is pleased to co-present a screening of the film "The Salt of the Earth" at the Human Rights Watch Film Festival. University of Guelph: Dasha Shenkman Lecture + MFA Open Studio

Dasha Shenkman Lecture in Contemporary Art Series

University of Guelph and the School of Fine Art and Music
present the 9th annual

Dasha Shenkman Lecture in Contemporary Art
Wednesday March 25, 2015, 6:00pm
War Memorial Hall, University of Guelph
Guelph, Ontario
Admission Free

Featuring: Michael Snow
Fine Art and Music

Since the fifties, Michael Snow has worked with objects, images and sound separately and together. In this year’s Shenkman Lecture, he will explore the identities of image and sound with examples from his manifold practice which includes drawing, collage, painting, sculpture, photographic works, lithography, holographic works, installation, film, video, bookworks, LP jackets, multiples, music improvisation, music composition, records, cassettes, CDs, performances, tours, broadcasts, soundtracks and sound installations.
Michael Snow is a national cultural treasure. No other living Canadian artist has made as profound a contribution to international visual culture and Canadian artistic identity. The University of Guelph is honoured to host a rare speaking appearance by this great artist.
Michael Snow’s output as an artist has consistently and persistently demanded that his audience be acutely aware of its perceptions. His appearance as the 9th Dasha Shenkman Lecturer will surely demand similar attention from his audience while offering an opportunity to hear a resident legend speak of his work. The lecture is open to the public and will be followed by a question and answer period moderated by Robert Enright, University of Guelph Research Chair in Art Criticism.
The annual Dasha Shenkman Lecture was established in 2007 and is made possible through the support of Dasha Shenkman, OBE, a Canadian art collector and philanthropist who lives in the United Kingdom.

The MFA students in the School of Fine Art and Music at the University of Guelph are pleased to welcome the public to their annual Open Studios, offering a rare inside look at the development of new work within the hothouse environment of an art program and a chance to chat with artists about their work in progress.
Open Studios 2015 features work by graduate candidates:
Steven Beckly, Simon M. Benedict, Patrick Cruz, Brandan Doty, Erika Dueck, Paul MacIntyre, John Haney, Maegan Harbridge, MinWoo Lee, Maegan Mehler, Janine Miedzik, Jasmine Reimer, Ambera Wellmann

The University of Guelph offers a two year Master of Fine Arts Degree that combines intensive studio concentration with seminars in theory and pedagogy. Exceptionally committed graduate faculty and limited student enrolment result in a community that is intensely involved in contemporary art and its discourse. A consistently excellent program of visiting artists, critics and curators extends this community.
Alumni from Guelph's MFA program include Derek Sullivan, Kristan Horton, Katie Bethune-Leaman, Martin Golland, Melanie Authier, Zin Taylor and David Urban.
