Tangled Art + Disability is a registered charitable organization with a mandate to support Deaf, Mad and disability-identified artists, to cultivate Deaf, Mad and disability arts in Canada, and to enhance access to the arts for artists and audiences of all abilities. Located in a dynamic arts complex of galleries, studios, festival offices and like-minded arts and community groups in Toronto, Tangled is a rapidly growing cultural leader in the area of disability and arts.

Tangled Art + Disability is seeking Board of Directors members who will bring dedication and vision into our organization. We require persons with a variety of qualifications such as financial expertise, fundraising, donor relations, legal, policy development and human resources knowledge as well as familiarity with contemporary disability arts.

Application Deadline: April 30, 2019.

The Tangled Board of Directors is a working/policy Board and each member is expected to attend bi-monthly meetings (six per year) and commit to serving a two-year term. In addition to adhering to Board governance and overseeing the finances of the organization, ideal candidates will also help develop and implement strategies that will generate revenue, attract new supporters and build the gallery’s profile. Commitments of each Board member include:

1. Regular attendance at Board meetings and important related meetings. 2. A commitment to participate actively in priority work as it arises. 3. Staying informed about board matters, which include preparing in advance for meetings, and reviewing and commenting on minutes and reports.

4. Getting to know other board members and building a collegial working relationship that contributes to consensus. 5. Getting to know and staying informed about the programming activities of the organization and of the arts community in Toronto generally. 6. Participation in fundraising for the organization.

Board members are volunteers and therefore cannot be financially compensated for their work, or exhibit at Tangled while being on the Board.

If you would like to join a dynamic, future forward organization with a dedication to accessible culture for all, please send a letter of introduction as well as a resume to: Board@tangledarts.org by April 30, 2019 at 5pm.

We welcome candidates from a wide range of backgrounds and experience. Tangled is strongly committed to equity within its community and to recruiting diverse members of the Board. Tangled encourages applications from all qualified candidates including persons with disabilities, First Nations, Métis and Inuit persons, members of racialized communities and LGBTQ-identified persons.

Potential candidates for the Tangled Art + Disability Board will be interviewed in May to determine your eligibility to run for election. Successful candidates will be notified by May 17, 2019 and they will be invited to begin their term in June. Candidates must be officially elected at the November, 2019 Annual General Meeting (AGM) where their names will be added to the slate of nominees put forward for election.

Art Gallery of Ontario's Artist-in-Residence Program: Call for Proposals

Art Gallery of Ontario
November 06, 2018 by Akin Collective in Call for Submissions, Residency

A Paid Residency for Artists: To connect with families and multi-generational audiences at the AGO

Are you, or do you know, an artist, collective and/or culture group interested in working with young families and multi-generational audiences? If so, the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO) has an opportunity to share.

The AGO is launching an innovative community residency, in conjunction with our winter exhibitions, public programs and learning streams. As a destination of choice for families of all shapes and sizes during March Break, the AGO invites artists and collectives to apply for an interactive two-month long residency (February 4 – March 31, 2019) to present their work as part of the AGO’s program of activities throughout March Break (March 9 – 17, 2019).

We are looking for artists who can conceptually combine contemporary art practices with maker experiences and live performance, and create a platform for experimentation and engagement for families during our winter season.

The artist or collective in residence will be asked to develop and present one distinct, interactive, collaborative artist project in Walker Court, our central exhibition space. In the case of a maker project, the artist project installation would accumulate over nine days; for other disciplines, the artist project would develop throughout and culminate at the end of March Break. The presentations should be geared for large multi-generational audiences, with a particular focus on young families.

The selected artist will have the opportunity to work with and join the AGO’s programming team while receiving valuable feedback from artist-educators, family facilitators and a production team to realize their proposals.

An honorarium of $8,000 CDN will be provided for the successful artist or collective in residence, including production time and material expenses. The successful artist or collective in residence must be available March 8 – 18, 2019 for program implementation.

Your work will inspire curiosity, fun, conversation, engagement, collaboration, spectacle and social relevance.

Application deadline: Thursday, November 15, 2018 @ 11:59 pm EST.

FLOURISHING: SOMEHOW WE STAY ATTUNED →

Tangled Art Gallery.
September 12, 2018 by Akin Collective in Exhibitions, Event

FLOURISHING: SOMEHOW WE STAY ATTUNED evokes new dynamics of the disabled experience in its attempts to re-world the narratives of non-normative futures of embodiment. As our world experiences drastic social and ethical changes we find ourselves facing a staggering amount of information. Therefore, we must look to the people who are attuned to these shifts; the artists and activists who represent the worlds in which they exist. Each artist’s lived experiences ground the starting point from which they explore their own interpretation of flourishing.

SOMEHOW WE STAY ATTUNED is an inquiry into the depths of how we navigate our bodies. The three featured artists do not present simple answers but rather, transform the gallery into a forum unfolding debate - within themselves, with each other, and with the audience.

Painters Make Better Lovers Group Show →

Northern Contemporary
May 31, 2018 by Akin Collective in Exhibitions, Event, Member News

Painters Make Better Lovers is a group painting show inspired by American painter Molly Zuckerman-Hartung’s 95 Theses on Painting. Using her manifesto as a jumping off point, the group proposes works that examine and reflect their own personal, political, and theoretical motivations as painters. As emerging artists, they seek a greater understanding of how elements including: aesthetics, the history of painting, and gender inform the underlying ethos of their work. Like Molly Zuckerman-Hartung, the artists work intuitively and celebrate painting as an ongoing conversation with oneself, other artists, and the environments they inhabit.

Painters Make Better Lovers

Location: Northern Contemporary

Dates: May 31st - June 5th, 2018.

Opening Reception: May 31st, 2018 at 6:30PM

Painters Make Better Lovers features the work of Rebekah Andrade of Akin King, Cristine Yunyk, Adelaide Thorhallsdottir, Inga Gircyte, and Kristin Morthens.

Through languages of painting and sculpture, Rebekah Andrade’s work explores definitions of the ideal form in its many expressions of architecture, geometry, space, and colour. Within these elements, she is interested in our desire to perfect characteristics and draws inspiration from challenging personal instincts to control and manipulate her inhabited spaces. Using this as a jumping off point the methods and boundaries of subject and medium are negotiated, intuitively evolving her geometric combinations, application of paint, and construction of forms. With a minimalistic approach of transitioning overlapping layers of ambiguous lines, texture, faded curves, and contrasting colours, we become emotionally receptive to the spaces within her paintings.  Rebekah holds a BFA in Visual Arts from Emily Carr University of Art and Design and is currently completing a Graphic Design certificate through Parsons School of Design in New York City. Her work has shown in Chile, Vancouver, and Toronto.
