Catherine Taǫmęˀšreˀ Tàmmaro is a multimedia artist and seated Wyandot FaithKeeper. Since 2019, Catherine has been Akin’s Elder Artist In Residence. We’re so excited Elder Catherine’s work will be coming to the Remote Gallery for her installation entitled FIRE OVER WATER. Fire Over Water involves sound, video, paintings, vitrines and more - inspired by Dr. Kathryn Magee Labelle’s book, Daughters of Aataentsic: Life Stories From Seven Generations, in conjunction with the Wendat Wyandot Women's Advisory Council.

Focused on Wendat/Wyandot women and their connection to their Ancestors, the land and waters; the Great Mystery and our Kin in the Natural World, Fire Over Water offers insight into Wendat/Wyandot placemaking, placekeeping, our Narratives, Motherwork as well as our precious relationships to each other across time, within the Wendat Confederacy.

Akin Welcomes Indigenous Elder, Artist in Residence Catherine Tammaro

January 28, 2019 by Akin Collective in Member News, Event, Residency

Akin is thrilled to welcome Wyandot multimedia artist and Tradition Keeper Catherine Tammaro (Taǫmęˀšreˀ) to our organization as our inaugural Indigenous Elder Artist in Residence - a relationship based on communication, creativity, awareness/visibility and relationship building between creative settler and Indigenous folk. This initiative will help Akin work toward maintaining its treaty responsibilities with Indigenous Peoples per the Dish With One Spoon Wampum Belt Covenant, an agreement between allied nations to care for and share the resources in the Great Lakes Region.

Catherine will hold open studio hours to engage with studio members and our larger community, provide creative and spiritual support for Indigenous artists and collaborate with Akin on initiatives prioritizing Indigenous artists and cultural producers. We understand that we have a lot of work to do in better supporting Indigenous folk, and making our spaces safe and enjoyable. This unique residency program is one step that we have worked together on for several months, and while excited, Akin recognizes the work we still have ahead of us.

A special thank you to our friend and advisor Rania El Mugammar whose support has made this program possible.

Please stay tuned for event details as we plan on welcoming Catherine with an evening gathering at Akin King (511 King St West) on February 15th, 2019 from 5:30-8:30PM.
