Samar Hejazi of Akin King (soon to be Akin x MOCA) will be exhibiting her recent audio visual piece Mawtini in Xpace Cultural Centre's Project Space from June 29 to July 28th 2018, opening reception on June 29th from 7-10PM.

Mawtini is an audio visual installation that simulates the internal experience of the Arab diaspora in the west through the appropriation of the english language. The installation is a combination of typographical artworks spanning across textile, soundscapes and video of the anthem Mawtini (homeland), an Arabic song by Palestinian poet Ibrahim Touqan. Hejazi’s piece allows the viewer to reflect on how ancestry and present environment merge to inform elements of a new and continually shifting (cultural) identity.

Through meditations on traditional practices and present environments, Hejazi's work merges eastern and western styles to express how the crossing of cultures can form new identities. Her choice in medium follows the conceptual needs of the piece which is primarily embroidery, but also includes works on paper and new media.
