Douglas Coupland-themed Mini MOCCA workshops

March 1: 9:00am-11:00am
Canada in Collage!
What does Canada look like to you? Cut, tear, stick and paste together your own portrait of our nation. Using magazines such as Macleans, Canadian Living and more, participants will explore what our country looks like and create their own unique collages of that vision. What is Canada? What are some uniquely Canadian ‘secret handshakes?’ Participants will use a myriad of arts and crafts materials to explore what it means to be Canadian and make their own collage landscapes to take home. This workshop is led by artist Jacquelyn van Kampen and the Collage Collective.

March 22: 9:00am-11:00am
Colour Coupland: Make Your Own Sketchbook
What is a sketchbook for? How is a sketchbook like a diary? Participants will discuss these ideas and make their own unique sketchbook before practicing using everything from crayons to ink to markers and more. Let their imaginations fill its fresh new pages and then take the book home to explore their creativity further! This session is led by crafter and artist Steph Hung.

April 12: 9:00am-11:00am
Mini Modern Houses: Prints and Inks
Inspired by Coupland’s piece, 345 Modern Houses, participants will design the layout for their ideal room – whether it’s a kitchen, library, bedroom, or playroom – then turn it into an edition of handmade prints! Using printmaking materials and brightly coloured inks and papers, these floor plan prints will be traded amongst participants then arranged to explore and create possible configurations for a MOCCA Mini modern house. This workshop is led by artist Elizabeth Underhill.

April 19: 9:00am-11:00am
Utopian Tower Time
After a special access tour of Douglas Coupland: everywhere is anywhere is anything is everything, participants (and parents that secretly love lego) will look at famous buildings from across the country and then see how Coupland uses building blocks in his artwork. Then it’s time for participants to unleash their creativity and build their own dream constructions! Part architecture, part sculpture, part collaborative installation. Join the group as we create a complex and colourful utopian urban landscape!

CAFKA.16: CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

CAFKA - Contemporary Art Forum Kitchener and Area is seeking submissions for its biennial exhibition of contemporary art in the public spaces of the Region of Waterloo to take place in June 2016.

ART SPIN: CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS 2015

Call for Submissions

for the 2015 Art Spin season

Art Spin is gearing up for its seventh season this summer and is looking for exciting and imaginative submissions for its three tours starting in June 2015.
Art Spin is a curated bicycle tour of contemporary art in Toronto. Programming consists of commissioned, multi-disciplinary works, which range from art performances to installations, as well as visits to galleries (commercial, artist run & public) and to artists’ studios. Along with the monthly bike tours, Art Spin also curates and mounts an annual group exhibition at the end of each season which takes place in an alternative industrial space. Art Spin tours have become one of the city’s most anticipated events of the summer, attracting a diverse and enthusiastic audience of at least 300 people per tour.
Central to Art Spin’s mandate and a big part of what makes our tours so exciting is our commitment to transplanting encounters with art from conventional, institutional spaces into more alternative and public environments. We believe that encounters with art truly come to life in a meaningful and engaging way when they are experienced in a communal context, in unique site-specific locations.
In past years we have commissioned projects that have taken place in parking structures, empty lots, public parks, vacant factories and warehouses, alleyways, churches, schoolyards, community spaces, hockey rinks and construction sites.
With this in mind Art Spin is looking for artist’s submissions that are able to respond to their urban and cultural environment. Submissions for art projects from all disciplines (visual arts, installation, sculpture, film & video, new media, performance art, dance, theatre and music etc.) will be accepted but only those that embody a site-specific vision will be reviewed.  This can mean work that responds to an environment in either a geographic, architectural, culture, or historical manner.
Submissions that rely on a gallery type setting will not be accepted.
Successful submissions will be considered for one of the three tours taking place on: June 18th, July 23rdAugust 20th.  (All tours begin at 6:30 and run until roughly9:30pm).
Submissions for time-based projects should last no longer than 15 minutes.
Although we encourage site-specific proposals, locations and venues may be altered in collaboration with the artist in order to better accommodate our tour routes.
Artists should keep in mind the large number of participants on Art Spin tours. Projects that can be easily viewed/experienced by larger groups are more successful, as are interactive projects.
Artists' fees between $500 - $1000, depending on the scope of the project, will be awarded.
Submission Guidelines:
(please review carefully)
  • project description (500 word maximum in attached .doc or PDF format only)
  • up to 10 images (attached files under 1M each, jpg, tiff, png, or gif) of proposed project and/or past work
  • or, for time-based projects, please include no more than 5 minutes of video-support material (attached as mov, m4v or wmf formats or link to vimeo or youtube in your project description).
  • A mix of photo and video support material will be accepted as long as there are no more than 10 items total, and no more than 5 minutes total of video
  • an up-to-date CV/Resume (in attached .doc or PDF format only)
  • please submit proposals by e-mail to info@artspin.ca, due by Friday March 6th (inclusive) 2014.
  • e-mailed submission must be titled “Art Spin submission 2015” and follow the guidelines above. All text and image files should be attached, not embedded in your e-mail. If you have a link (for vimeo or youtube video only) please be sure to include it in your project description and not in the body of your e-mail.
We highly recommend having a look at past examples of projects featured on Art Spin tours if you have never attended one:

If you have any further questions about the submissions process, please don’t hesitate to contact us at info@artspin.ca.

Ride the ARTbus and discover some of the winter’s best exhibitions in the GTA!

Justina M. Barnicke Gallery and University of Toronto Art Centre

The winter ARTbus begins at the Justina M. Barnicke Gallery and University of Toronto Art Centre with a tour of Sign, sign, everywhere a sign by guest curator Sarah Robayo Sheridan. Drawing on the Hart House and UTAC collections, this joint-venue exhibition considers how signs and symbols have been observed, adopted and altered in the work of artists from early modernity to today. Commercial graphics are an omnipresent feature of urban landscapes, whether in the proliferation of billboards and screens, the identity programs of nations and institutions, or the visual logic of window display. In response, artists have initiated their own symbolic studies and counter campaigns, progressively infiltrating signs and symbols to their own ends. Featuring work by Berenice Abbott, Carl Beam, James Carl, Ian Carr-Harris, Lynne Cohen, Robin Collyer, Greg Curnoe, Robert Fones, Robert Frank, General Idea, Hadley+Maxwell, Richard Hamilton, Jamelie Hassan, David Hlynsky, Luis Jacob, Will Kwan, Ken Lum, Kelly Mark, Ron Terada, Jeff Thomas, and John Thomson.

Blackwood Gallery

The ARTbus continues to the Blackwood Gallery for a tour of Inside by guest curator John Armstrong. Inside includes work by eight artists who use the various technologies and traditions that painting offers to engage the Blackwood Gallery’s exhibition spaces and reflect on the established genre of interior painting. Several of the artists will paint directly on the Blackwood’s walls or floor while other artists will exhibit mural-sized or more intimately scaled easel paintings. All of these artists connect painting in its many guises—from illusionistic or schematic tableau to a celebration of paint’s physical nature—with built interior spaces in order to ask us to reconsider painting’s longstanding critical and poetic engagement with the rooms we inhabit. Featuring work by Mark Bell, Pierre Dorion, Dorian FitzGerald, Sara Hartland-Rowe, Maria Hupfield, Denyse Thomasos, and Rhonda Weppler & Trevor Mahovsky.

Oakville Galleries

Next, at Oakville Galleries at Centennial Square and Oakville Galleries in Gairloch Gardens, visit the opening of Depth of Perception. What once seemed like a clear division between “real" and “virtual”—tangible things/bodies and spectral images/platforms—has all but broken down in recent years. The screen image—whether cinematic, digital or otherwise—has proven to be transformative, readily altering our perception of environments, objects and ourselves, while taking on a presence and palpability akin to “solid” objects. Since at least the 1960s, artists have mined the relationship between sculpture and screen to explore what Kate Mondloch describes as "objecthood and illusionism in tandem.” Depth of Perception considers how one’s vantage point on the world—and the integrity of physical, sculptural objects—have been altered by the screen’s roles as frame, window, mirror, and interface. Featuring work by Trisha Baga, Peter Campus, Alex Da Corte, Anne de Vries, Christoph Girardet & Matthias Müller, Hadley+Maxwell, Marisa Hoicka and Johnny Forever, Oliver Husain, Vishal Jugdeo, Owen Kydd, Linda Quinlan, and Judy Radul.
