On the last Wednesday of every month Akin host’s a relaxed and fun ‘Show and Tell for Artists’ at one of the Akin Collective studios. This is a time for Akin members and other Toronto artists to show completed works or works in progress and get friendly feedback and answers from their peers in a casual studio setting.

Feel free to bring art to share, bring a friend or two, bring snacks or drinks or just bring yourself! Come for the conversation or just to meet people and hang out.

Tangled Art Gallery launches its inaugural season with Point of Origin by melannie g campbell or Akin Dupont.

Point of Origin draws on traditional, contemporary and afro-futuristic aesthetics and techniques. Using poetry, quilts and tapestries, campbell carefully examines dynamic embodied relationships - those between trauma and fibromyalgia, between capitalism and ableism, between legacy and wisdom, between Blackness and life, between freedom and place, and between dreaming and staying woke. The exhibit invites the visitor to consider - How would we think about our days if instead of squeezing our complicated bodies into others’ formulas for life, we were encouraged and supported to live our days in pulse to our own rhythm?

This exhibit features audio description for all works and will also have to touchable pieces. All events associated with this exhibit will be barrier-free and will have ASL interpretation. We request that you help us make these scent-free. This is a FREE event.


ABOUT TAG
Tangled Art Gallery (TAG), a unique new exhibition space dedicated to showcasing disability arts and advancing accessible curatorial practices in Toronto’s iconic arts building – 401 Richmond.

Audiences can expect to engage with art that reshapes understandings of disability, encounter disability artists who invigorate the art world, and interact with inclusive technologies that reimagine how we experience art. Point of Origin will be the first show of the inaugural 2016-17 season.

About the artisan series
Since 2010, BOMBAY SAPPHIRE and the Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation have provided emerging artists with an international platform to showcase their work. The Bombay Sapphire Artisan Series is a search to discover this year’s next big name in in visual arts. Thousands will submit their artwork online and selected artists will be rewarded with a platform to share their artistry with curators, collectors, and art enthusiasts around the world.

The Grand Prize winner will receive a cash stipend to create a body of work for a solo exhibit at SCOPE Miami Beach 2017 and the opportunity to complete a public installation in 2017. The First Place Winner and People’s Choice Winner will each receive a cash stipend to create a solo exhibit at a gallery in their region.

Submissions open until August 17, 2016.

Akin Projects @ Big on Bloor Festival

Visit the interactive Akin Projects booth at the Big on Bloor Festival! Akin will be on-site at Bloor Street West and Brock Ave on Sunday July 24 from 12pm - 3pm, but the festival lasts all weekend!

The BIG on Bloor Festival of Arts and Culture, one of Toronto’s best and most loved summer street festivals is a two-day, car-free summer street celebration of arts, culture and small business all in the Bloordale neighbourhood (Bloor Street West from Dufferin to Landsdowne).

Now in its 9th year with nearly 100,000 people attending each year, the BIG on Bloor Festival of Arts and Culture runs Saturday, July 23 from 1 p.m. until midnight and on Sunday, July 24 from noon until 6 p.m. Residents and visitors alike can experience a participatory festival with more than fifty original hands-on cultural projects that have been commissioned especially for you! Make something, learn something, engage and enjoy hundreds of distinct musical and theatre acts, art projects, games, poetry, architecture inventions, one-of-a-kind exhibitions and shops.

ABOUT PLACE/SETTING
Over the course of two weeks, Akin Projects will deliver a series of all-ages clay-making workshops and community events. Drawing inspiration from Judy Chicago’s iconic work The Dinner Party, visitors will interact with ceramics in a more social, contemporary way. (for more information about Judy Chicago please visit: www.artsy.net/artist/judy-chicago ) Contemporary ceramists will lead workshops with visitors in which they will create a functional object. As they are created and prepared for display, the works will slowly set the table for a community celebration and active installation. The walls of the space will be covered to create a living sketchbook that documents the project and the planning of each unique piece. The closing event will be a community celebration for all of the participants. Visitors will be allowed to share and trade the tableware created, reinterpreting the value placed on functional objects.

ABOUT THE MAKE IT REAL PROJECT
The Gardiner Museum works with community and cultural partners to enhance the richness and diversity of the cultural sector. This summer, we’re hosting a Community Arts Space in our exhibition hall. Through an open call for proposals, the Gardiner selected five partners to explore four themes—interactivity, performance, community-engaged arts, and city building. There’s something for everyone . From fort building to clay hand building, and from experimental theatre to participatory workshops, experience the best the city has to offer at the Gardiner.

AKIN COMMUNITY & CAMH:
Call for Submissions - Youth Arts Programming - Summer Program

Akin Community and CAMH invite artists and arts organizations to submit proposals for arts-related programming for small groups of youth aged 14-21. Possibilities include workshops, performances of dance, music or theatre, presentations, films, artist talks or demonstrations, or anything else you can dream up!

Activities or events will take place on Thursdays from 11am-12pm (1 hour long) at CAMH facilities on Queen Street West between July 11, 2016 and August 19, 2016 and will involve groups of between four and ten individuals. We are looking for a diverse range of volunteer-led programming. Single session events/activities are welcome as well as longer-term projects.

On site facilities include art supplies and materials, large work-space, computers, projectors, musical and sound equipment, a large outdoor space and video/electronic equipment. Proposals are welcome from individuals, collectives, established cultural organizations or institutions, performers, visual artists, community arts organizations, and more.

If you would like to submit a proposal for this volunteer opportunity please send a brief description of your programming idea to jen@akincollective.com. Please also include a short description of yourself or your organization, and include a list of any supplies or equipment needed. We look forward to hearing your proposals!

Akin Collective members and friends will be gathering between 2-4pm but feel free to show up earlier and stay later as it is the LAST DAY to enjoy the collage fun at Division Gallery.

ABOUT PAUL BUTLER'S COLLAGE PARTY:
The Collage Party is a touring studio open to the public, where people come together and make art in a social setting. Over the past two decades, Butler has staged The Collage Party throughout North America and Europe, in museums, private residences, public schools, universities, hospitals, department stores, and community centres. Butler considers The Collage Party as his studio, where he is able to draw from participants’ ideas, energies, and more specifically, the scraps they produce. Butler invites participants (friends, artists, community groups), supplies materials (magazines, scissors, adhesives), and leaves out instruction. Display and production synchronize in a choreography of tearing, pasting, shuffling, searching, tacking and ripping that negates the precincts of personal space or private ownership. For this iteration at Division Gallery, Butler has restaged his Winnipeg studio in the gallery so that disparate realms—Winnipeg and Toronto, studio and gallery, labour and commerce—are folded into one another, cancelling the gulf that once maintained their seeming separation.
