CAMH One Brave Night 2019

April 01, 2019 by Akin Collective in Member News

From now until May 10th, Akin Dupont member Jill Smith is participating in CAMH's One Brave Night and raising funds to support mental health. Jill Smith recently started a new position at the CAMH Foundation. And this campaign is near and dear to her heart!

Did you know that one in five Canadians experience mental illness in any given year? And yet many don't consider it a real health issue. By supporting this fundraising campaign with a donation, YOU can shine a spotlight on mental health. Together, we will help shape a world where mental illness is seen in the same light as every other illness, and all people receive the care they need and deserve.

Jill Smith is an interdisciplinary artist based in Toronto, Ontario (1995). Her most recent work explores everyday absurdity, as well as the connective possibilities of materiality. By re-contextualizing familiar motifs with organic, bodily forms, her work calls into question how one both exists and performs as a social body. While Smith’s work stimulates the imagination through whimsical and nonsensical colour and form, it is the relatable, yet ambiguous materiality that offers a platform to question the familiar, and escape to the alien and the uncanny.

As a thank you, for each donation Jill Smith will be making a mini ceramic sculpture. She will be delivering/shipping them to each donor after May 10th. Please donate today and help Jill Smith reach her fundraising goal $1,000.00. Every little bit helps!

AKIN COMMUNITY & CAMH:
Call for Submissions - Youth Arts Programming - Summer Program

Akin Community and CAMH invite artists and arts organizations to submit proposals for arts-related programming for small groups of youth aged 14-21. Possibilities include workshops, performances of dance, music or theatre, presentations, films, artist talks or demonstrations, or anything else you can dream up!

Activities or events will take place on Thursdays from 11am-12pm (1 hour long) at CAMH facilities on Queen Street West between July 11, 2016 and August 19, 2016 and will involve groups of between four and ten individuals. We are looking for a diverse range of volunteer-led programming. Single session events/activities are welcome as well as longer-term projects.

On site facilities include art supplies and materials, large work-space, computers, projectors, musical and sound equipment, a large outdoor space and video/electronic equipment. Proposals are welcome from individuals, collectives, established cultural organizations or institutions, performers, visual artists, community arts organizations, and more.

If you would like to submit a proposal for this volunteer opportunity please send a brief description of your programming idea to jen@akincollective.com. Please also include a short description of yourself or your organization, and include a list of any supplies or equipment needed. We look forward to hearing your proposals!

About Akin Community:
Akin Community aims to cultivate and strengthen Toronto communities by providing access to unique arts programming, workshops and projects that explore the psychosocial impact of engaging with the creative side of life. We facilitate opportunities for marginalized groups to connect, grow, and be inspired outside of the traditional learning models by forming collaborations between local artists and community groups. We provide transformative experiences, engagements and educational opportunities through the arts in communities that creatively change the fabric of social services and offer positive change in new ways.

About CAMH Child, Youth and Family Program:
The Child, Youth and Family Program is committed to client-centred care, providing intensive and specialized services for young people with mental health and/or addiction problems. We work with and welcome clients from all backgrounds and cultures. In addition to our clinical services, we are involved in research, education, prevention and health promotion for child and youth mental health and addictions.
