University of Guelph: Dasha Shenkman Lecture + MFA Open Studio

Dasha Shenkman Lecture in Contemporary Art Series

present the 9th annual

Dasha Shenkman Lecture in Contemporary Art
Wednesday March 25, 2015, 6:00pm
War Memorial Hall, University of Guelph
Guelph, Ontario
Admission Free

Featuring: Michael Snow
Fine Art and Music

Since the fifties, Michael Snow has worked with objects, images and sound separately and together. In this year’s Shenkman Lecture, he will explore the identities of image and sound with examples from his manifold practice which includes drawing, collage, painting, sculpture, photographic works, lithography, holographic works, installation, film, video, bookworks, LP jackets, multiples, music improvisation, music composition, records, cassettes, CDs, performances, tours, broadcasts, soundtracks and sound installations.
Michael Snow is a national cultural treasure. No other living Canadian artist has made as profound a contribution to international visual culture and Canadian artistic identity. The University of Guelph is honoured to host a rare speaking appearance by this great artist.
Michael Snow’s output as an artist has consistently and persistently demanded that his audience be acutely aware of its perceptions. His appearance as the 9th Dasha Shenkman Lecturer will surely demand similar attention from his audience while offering an opportunity to hear a resident legend speak of his work. The lecture is open to the public and will be followed by a question and answer period moderated by Robert Enright, University of Guelph Research Chair in Art Criticism.
The annual Dasha Shenkman Lecture was established in 2007 and is made possible through the support of Dasha Shenkman, OBE, a Canadian art collector and philanthropist who lives in the United Kingdom.

Open Studios 2015 features work by graduate candidates:

The University of Guelph offers a two year Master of Fine Arts Degree that combines intensive studio concentration with seminars in theory and pedagogy. Exceptionally committed graduate faculty and limited student enrolment result in a community that is intensely involved in contemporary art and its discourse. A consistently excellent program of visiting artists, critics and curators extends this community.
Alumni from Guelph's MFA program include Derek Sullivan, Kristan Horton, Katie Bethune-Leaman, Martin Golland, Melanie Authier, Zin Taylor and David Urban.

WORKSHOP SERIES: THE STORY OF THE LOST EXPEDITION

The Story Of The Lost Expedition

6 Wed night workshops from Mar 18 thru Apr 22 / 2015

"When The Lost Expedition met they sat in a circle of twelve seats, one of which was always empty"
These workshops focus on using Story as a way to talk about something that can’t be talked about, to refer to something that can’t be seen directly, to bring unknowns (even unknowable unknowns) into relationship together. When used this way Story can become a framework to facilitate a change in consciousness for an individual within a group and, more importantly, to facilitate a change in consciousness for the group-as-a-whole. Participants in the workshops will be encouraged to take on a role within the story and to let the story evolve and inform their investigation.

Allen Morgan and En Burk have been working with the story of The Lost Expedition since 1986, with many other artists taking part over the years. Recently this work has taken on the form of a mandala. These workshops will take place within this mandala landscape.

Working with story can be particularly useful for artists of all persuasions. In order to take on a role in the story and sit on one of the seats in the circle of twelve, it is necessary for workshop participants to remember and then encourage a relationship with the unknown (and perhaps even unknowable) source that lies at the heart of their own personal work. Finding new ways to express and act within such a relationship is a primary concern for all artists.

There is a somewhat unusual fee schedule for the 6 workshops: $30 to be paid by participants before or at the first workshop. After they complete the second workshop $20 will be paid to participants at each subsequent workshop they attend. There are only 10 spaces available for these workshops.

CANADIAN ART: EDITORIAL RESIDENCY

Call for Applications: 2015 Editorial Residency

Editorial and web staff at work at the Canadian Art office. Photo Stefanie Fiore.
We are now accepting applications for the 2015 Canadian Art Foundation Editorial Residency. The residency is a national prize awarded annually to a current undergraduate, graduate or other post-secondary student with an interest in developing expertise in the realm of professional art-magazine publishing. Now in its 11th year, the prize awards an 11-week summer residency at Canadian Art, along with a $7,000 prize. The winner will hone writing and editing skills while learning production procedures for online and print media atCanadian Art. This introduction to art-magazine publishing and writing is intended to foster new editorial and critical talent, and to provide hands-on experience working in the field.
The 2014 residency was won by emerging curator, writer and art-history student Natasha Chaykowski, who said of her experience:
Being the editorial resident at Canadian Art provided me with an unparalleled and rare opportunity to learn about the production of print media. Having only previously worked with online publications, I found this to be an incredibly formative and instructive experience. In addition to learning about magazine production, I was also able to further develop my writing style and hone editing skills—both of which are essential for working in publishing specifically, but also in the arts more generally. The skills I gained this summer at Canadian Art have already been and will continue to be proven invaluable.
To apply, send a 500-word review of a contemporary-art exhibition, a list of titles of recent academic and/or professional writing on art, a cover letter and a one-page CV.
Send applications to residency@canadianart.ca by 5 p.m. EDT on Thursday, April 2, 2015.
