PLACE/SETTING is happening June 28 to July 8 at the Gardiner Museum
ABOUT PLACE/SETTING
Over the course of two weeks, Akin Projects will deliver a series of all-ages clay-making workshops and community events. Drawing inspiration from Judy Chicago’s iconic work The Dinner Party, visitors will interact with ceramics in a more social, contemporary way. (for more information about Judy Chicago please visit: www.artsy.net/artist/judy-chicago ) Contemporary ceramists will lead workshops with visitors in which they will create a functional object. As they are created and prepared for display, the works will slowly set the table for a community celebration and active installation. The walls of the space will be covered to create a living sketchbook that documents the project and the planning of each unique piece. The closing event will be a community celebration for all of the participants. Visitors will be allowed to share and trade the tableware created, reinterpreting the value placed on functional objects.
ABOUT THE MAKE IT REAL PROJECT
The Gardiner Museum works with community and cultural partners to enhance the richness and diversity of the cultural sector. This summer, we’re hosting a Community Arts Space in our exhibition hall. Through an open call for proposals, the Gardiner selected five partners to explore four themes—interactivity, performance, community-engaged arts, and city building. There’s something for everyone . From fort building to clay hand building, and from experimental theatre to participatory workshops, experience the best the city has to offer at the Gardiner.

ABOUT PAUL BUTLER'S COLLAGE PARTY:
The Collage Party is a touring studio open to the public, where people come together and make art in a social setting. Over the past two decades, Butler has staged The Collage Party throughout North America and Europe, in museums, private residences, public schools, universities, hospitals, department stores, and community centres. Butler considers The Collage Party as his studio, where he is able to draw from participants’ ideas, energies, and more specifically, the scraps they produce. Butler invites participants (friends, artists, community groups), supplies materials (magazines, scissors, adhesives), and leaves out instruction. Display and production synchronize in a choreography of tearing, pasting, shuffling, searching, tacking and ripping that negates the precincts of personal space or private ownership. For this iteration at Division Gallery, Butler has restaged his Winnipeg studio in the gallery so that disparate realms—Winnipeg and Toronto, studio and gallery, labour and commerce—are folded into one another, cancelling the gulf that once maintained their seeming separation.

BEES (& the Birds) is a salon style art show to raise funds and awareness for our bee friends. A group of 38 artists coming together to use their art to help the bees including Jen Pilles of Akin Lansdowne.
The second annual show is once again at Graven Feather Gallery. The show runs from May 18 to 29, 2016 and the OPENING Reception will be held on Thursday, May 19 from 6 to 9 p.m.
Each of the artists participating in the show want to make a difference and help the bees. The works are bee inspired pieces that explore the role of this alchemist insect in our world.
These artists felt their work could play a big role in raising awareness and money - offering solutions for individuals - for our community - and for our world.
That's why 10% of all show proceeds - including sales - will go to the David Suzuki Foundation's efforts to save the bees.
Organized by artist Christine Pensa (Art That Moves) and Erin Candela and Pam Lobb (Graven Feather) the show features painting, prints, drawings, and photographs on the theme or bees and other pollinators.
Carolyn Tripp of Akin Lansdowne will be joining a team of Canadian and International media artists at the Ed Video booth at this year's Art-Athina event in Athens Greece happening May 26-29, 2016.
Launched in 1993 by the Hellenic Art Galleries Association, Art-Athina stands today as one of the longest lasting contemporary art fairs in Europe and as the largest annual visual arts event in Greece. A meeting point for international artistic creation, Art-Athina brings together significant Greek and international art galleries, cultural institutions, curators, collectors, art critics and art lovers. Ed Video is excited to showcase a selection of recent media art to a large, international audience of over 40,000 people.
The Ed Video booth, curated by Scott McGovern, will be displaying video work by Iris Fraser & David Hanes, Adriana Martinez, Sam Noseworthy, Zachariah Tatham, Zouassi as well as Carolyn Tripp. Displayed on flatscreens, these videos redefine how we think about time and space, at once shrinking and expanding our perception of the world and our reality. Presented together, the work suggests that time and space are flexible concepts without much influence on how people can relate to each other and with progressive ideas.
Follow Carolyn via her Instagram account while she travels in Greece, and explores Art-Athina.
The 6th Annual Birkdale Art in the Park will take place on July 9, 2016. This year, Scarborough Arts joins the Midland Park Community Association to execute this important event that supports the growth and visibility of Scarborough’s vibrant artistic community.
Midland Park Community Association representative David Barnes notes:
“What began five years ago continues to grow with many local artists and artisans who produce and sell original works of art including jewellery, photographs, mixed media, cards, oil and acrylic paintings and handmade crafts in our indoor and outdoor juried art show.”
The Akin Projects Skillshare is a casual, moderated discussion for arts entrepreneurs and creative business people in a studio environment. Connect with your peers through practical experience at this collaborative event. Share your skills, resources, and ideas, and have your questions answered about zines, books, print and publishing.

About The Show
The Thesis Award Show is a collaboration between ARTiculations, Graven Feather Studio and Akin Collective in support of graduating post secondary students. In early 2016 a call was sent out across the Province for applications in search of students demonstrating a coherent body of work unique in both concept and execution. Overwhelmed by the response, we extend a huge thank you to all of the applicants and congratulate this year's winners, Annunziata Morant & Jennifer Byrnes for their achievements. In addition to solo exhibitions, Morant & Byrnes each received studio credit with Akin Collective as part of the award.
Annunziata Morant
Forget Me Not
May 2nd-15th
Reception: Thursday May 12th, 7-9pm
Location: Graven Feather, 906 Queen Street West, Toronto, ON M6J 1G6
‘Remember Death’ warns the Latin phrase Memento Mori and so too are we elegantly reminded, by the recent work of artist Annunziata Morant. In Morant’s delicate and haunting series, we are forced to confront our own mortality through the memorialization of others. Functioning as physical, artistic reminders of our own eventual passing in fitting with the latin theory on the reflection of death, the ghostly victorian figures whisper that for us too, clocks will continue to tick. In these intimate, moving digital prints, acrylic seeps and colourfully trickles down the page (lifelines, tear streams perhaps) instigating discussion of personal histories and the transience of our lives. These works are as much mirrors for the viewer as they are windows onto lives already lived. Through an extensive and obsessive research process, Morant’s vast archive of Victorian mourning ephemera from the Victorian serves as an entry point for such contemplation and conversations in a contemporary setting. Nudging and prodding, the artist’s lovingly altered memorials remind us to be mindful- our day will also come.
Morant is a recent graduate of the Ontario College of Art And Design University BFA Program.
Jennifer Byrnes
Negative Forty
May 1st- 15th
Reception: Wednesday May 11th 7-9pm
Location: ARTiculations, 2928 Dundas St West, Toronto, ON, M6P 1Y8
Vast and powerful while detailed and delicate, Jennifer Byrnes series of prints’ offer varying perspectives and approaches to landscapes both natural and, perhaps, somewhere beyond. Through the laborious and historically expansive process of copper plate printmaking, the artist explores and expands upon the relationship between natural and geometric forms and ratio. Ink pools and holds in the sunken areas of Byrnes’ incised lines on the copper to create, curiously and conversely, scenes unbound by the limitations of reality or physical grounding. Mountains float and hover tied through delicate light lines. As worlds are inverted and mirrored in mythical, spiritual visions and scenes. Like the artist’s process itself, we are reminded about the delicate balance between opposites- lightness and weight. Telling of the artist’s interest in the concept of infinity, perhaps if something is both positive and negative concurrently it simply floats on forever.
Byrnes is a recent graduate of the University of Waterloo BFA Program.
Artist Talks by both artists will be held at ARTiculations on Sunday, May 15th at 3pm
