Window Installation Open Call for Gift Shop Show

November 01, 2019 by Akin Collective in Call for Submissions

What is “The Gift Shop” Show?

“The Gift Shop” Show is a well-curated and uniquely designed gift shopping experience in The Storefront Gallery at Arts Etobicoke. This show will have a variety of arts and crafts from many disciplines. We want to showcase craft and design from the diverse artists, members, and artisans that live, work, and play in our community.

What to consider while proposing the window design?

The Storefront Gallery at Arts Etobicoke will be transforming into an unusual art and design walk-in shop complete with an extravagant window display. The gallery will be decorated and designed around the theme of illuminating celebration. We would encourage proposals to have fluorescent, neon, pop colours, lights and glow in the dark paints or any other materials and mediums that would attract the audience to come into the space. This display will add sparkle and shine to the objects on sale.

Call for Visual Artists Montgomery's Inn 2020 Art Exhibitions

October 30, 2019 by Akin Collective in Call for Submissions

Envision your artwork displayed on the gallery walls of a busy multi-use museum! Montgomery's Inn is currently accepting applications for the 2020 exhibit cycle

About Montgomery's Inn As part of the community since 1830, Montgomery's Inn was originally built for Thomas and Margaret Montgomery. Over the years the inn has served as a home, a place of business and a community meeting place in the heart of Etobicoke. In 1975 the restored inn was opened as a museum and today it is one of ten history museums managed by the City of Toronto. In addition to a weekly farmers' market, school programs, and special events, Montgomery's Inn has two public rooms that also function as exhibition spaces (the Community Room and the Briarly Room).

Application Details We are looking for proposals that provide modern interpretation to the historical role played by Montgomery's Inn as a tavern, farm, local gathering place and community hub. We are specifically looking for exhibits that provide Montgomery's Inn with opportunities to engage with visitors and communities through a range of arts and cultural programming. Montgomery's Inn is looking to collaborate with artists who are interested in doing programming related to their exhibits for our weekend Tea Series: Tea Time at the Inn. Do you have an idea about an artist talk, workshop or family drop- in that can be connected to your exhibit? If your exhibit is selected by the jury you can discuss ideas and opportunities for public programming with the Montgomery's Inn Program Officer. Spaces for public programming are limited and will be discussed on a case by case basis and are optional for the artist. If you don't have an idea or are not able to commit to public programming your application will still be considered.

About the Application To request a Montgomery's Inn exhibitor Application Form or more information, please contact the Museum Curator by phone or email at 416-394-8112 or montinn@toronto.ca. All application forms must be submitted by the deadline: Monday 4 November, 2019.

Library of Things We Can Learn from Each Other

October 05, 2019 by Akin Collective in Event

Library of Things We Can Learn from Each Other is an evolving, temporary collection of community insights. The participatory project welcomes into circulation skills and knowledge from community members on a broad range of topics, from the everyday and instructional to abstract and conceptual. Embracing non-expert and experience based knowledge, practical, theoretical or intuitive understandings, the content of the library reflects the interests of the people who contribute to it and celebrates the unique assets each person brings to the community. In addition to the circulating collection, the Library of Things We Can Learn from Each Other contains reference material and a reading room for public use and functions as a site to browse, borrow, lend and connect.

Library of Things We Can Learn from Each Other runs September 26 - December 19.

There are a few different ways you can participate in the library:

Lend: what practical skill, niche interest or theoretical understanding can you teach someone else about? To submit an entry into public circulation, drop by the project space to talk to me in person or please fill out this form.

Borrow: what is a subject you would like to learn more about? Submit a request to borrow community knowledge by stopping by the space in person or filling out this form.

Free School: we are also inviting community members to share their skills in a group setting. Free School sessions will happen periodically and are open to anyone who is interested in hosting a session, on any topic. No previous facilitation experience is required and facilitators will receive a small honorarium for their time, as well as a small material fee if appropriate. If you’re interested in hosting a Free School session please submit an application here.

Akin Lakeshore Studios Featured in Etobicoke Guardian!

Akin Lakeshore Studios

“It’s about cross pollination”
— founder Oliver Pauk

Akin Lakeshore makes art studio space affordable in Etobicoke!

Last week Akin’s newest location in Etobicoke was featured in the Etobicoke Guardian and we couldn’t be more appreciative for this and the wonderfully positive response and warm welcome we have received in this new neighborhood. Continue reading below for an excerpt from the article by Tamara Shephard.

“Photographers. Painters. Sculptors. Writers. Video creators. Fashion designers. Jewelry makers.

Toronto is home to artists of acclaim in every medium, yet there’s an ever-increasing shortage of affordable workspace.

Akin Collective’s model responds to the challenge with monthly, affordable rentals of art studios and workspaces of varying sizes across Toronto, everywhere from inside the Museum of Contemporary Art to a converted former butcher shop at St. Clair Avenue West and Keele Street.

Next month, Akin Lakeshore opens to Etobicoke-based artists as 6,000 square feet of converted vacant commercial space on the third floor of 2970 Lake Shore Blvd. W. at Eighth Street.

Daylight floods through four foot tall windows and bounces off the bright white walls in a labyrinth of rooms, soon to become more than 30 dedicated art studios and shared workspaces, square footages taped out on grey carpet.”

Akin Lakeshore: Akin Transforms Unused Etobicoke Office Space into Artist Studios

July 22, 2019 by Akin Collective in Event

July 22, 2019.

Akin is excited to announce its expansion into Etobicoke with the addition of its newest location, Akin Lakeshore. Converting 6,000sqft of an unused and vacant commercial building located at 2970 Lakeshore Blvd West into usable space for local artists, Akin Lakeshore will provide more than 30 dedicated art studios and workspaces available to rent for creative endeavours of all kinds.

Studios at Akin Lakeshore will range in price and size, starting at 25sqft or $165/month to 140sqft for $551/month, as well as large, open communal areas to accommodate Shared Memberships for $70/month. All rentals include 24/7 access to the studio building, taxes, insurance, wifi, and access to the communal working areas, storage, kitchen, and bathroom facilities.

In addition to studio space, Akin plans to expand its programming initiatives at this new location and introduce a series of free and low-cost public events launching in the Fall of 2019.

This exciting expansion will increase Akin’s size to approximately 45,000 sqft of studio space serving nearly 400 artists, enabling Akin to continue addressing the ever-increasing scarcity of affordable workspace across our city.

Special thank you to local arts organizations Arts Etobicoke, Lakeshore Arts and the Humber Arts Commons for welcoming us into the neighbourhood!

If you are interested in renting a studio at Akin Lakeshore, please join us for one of our Open Studio days in August where you can have a look around the new space, and find out more about Akin! Our staff will be available to answer your questions and show you around. Everyone is welcome! Please note that the studios are located on the third floor of the building and there is no elevator. Akin regrets this barrier to access.
