FORGE: Grant Writing 101 with the Ontario Arts Council

September 2, 6:30pm
Ontario Arts Council- 151 Bloor Street West, 5th Floor Toronto, ON

Writing grants is a significant part of many artist's careers- so let's how to do it properly! This interactive workshop will explore the process of planning, writing and submitting grant proposals to different governing bodies

As a major funder themselves, the Ontario Arts Council provide clear examples of the grant writing process and the various the dos and don'ts of everything from creating your budget to organizing your support material and work plan.

Afterwards, participants will form a 'mock jury' and look at real examples of successful (and unsuccessful) grant applications. Join us and learn how to get grants from the people that give them at their own office!

Janice Lambrakos is Information Services Coordinator with the Ontario Arts Council.
Janice Lambrakos takes pride in having worked for the Ontario Arts Council for the past 25 years. She has provided administrative support in a number of program offices, including Community Arts, Film, Photography and Video (now Media Arts), and Literature, giving her an in-depth knowledge of many of the OAC’s granting programs. In 2000 Janice was promoted to Information Services Coordinator within OAC’s Outreach and Development section. This role has taken her to communities throughout Ontario, where she conducts information and grant application-writing sessions with individual artists. GALLERY 44: OUTREACH

OUTREACH

2015 COMMUNITY PARTNERS

SUPPORT THE PROGRAM HERE
+ LEARN MORE HERE
OUTREACH is our award-winning education program designed specifically for youth from underserved communities, using photography as a medium of creative self-expression. OUTREACH breaks down barriers to the arts and encourages youth to develop their creative voice and understand the power of the photographic image. Through OUTREACH, Gallery 44 works in collaboration with community organizations to offer black and white photography workshops to over 50 young people in the G.T.A. The workshops have a different thematic focus each year, which guides the youth from concept, through to production and exhibition at Gallery 44.
Every year, Gallery 44 awards two participants from our OUTREACH program, the David Barker Maltby Award in keeping with his commitment to education, community activism and documentary photography.  Award winners, nominated by instructors and selected by a committee, have excelled within the OUTREACH program.  Recipients are awarded based on their talent and commitment to continuing with their arts practice.
Through the OUTREACH program, Gallery 44 provides photography education outside of the formal school system and builds relationships with other non-profit community organizations by offering photography workshops free of charge to youth. These workshops are designed to meet the specific needs of each youth group involved, and are taught by qualified photographers who have a personal relationship with each community organization.

Zachary Cummings | MIND THE GAP

There is awareness in these paintings that a great gulf exists between renderings of ancient structures as they once appeared, and their ruins that exist in the present. The expanse of time that elapses between original construction and eventual ruin is formless and empty; time constitutes a negative space.

image

$10,000 Awards for Emerging Ceramic and Glass Artists!
Are you an emerging artist? Do you want to develop your artistic practice? We have two opportunities for you!

The Canadian Clay & Glass Gallery is calling for submissions to the 2015 RBC Award for Glass and Winifred Shantz Award for Ceramics.

These prestigious national awards allow practising early career ceramic and glass artists to undertake a period of independent research, or other activities that advance their artistic and professional practice. The winner of each Award will receive $10,000. The selection is made by a jury comprised of respected contemporary glass and ceramic artists and other arts professionals. Winners will be celebrated and the awards presented at a gala event in Waterloo Ontario on November 14, 2015.

To be eligible for the Winifred Shantz Award for Ceramics or the RBC Award for Glass, artists must be Canadian citizens or have Permanent Resident status. They must have developed skills through training and/or practice in the field (not necessarily in academic institutions) and be recognized by other artists working in the same artistic tradition. Successful candidates seek payment for their work and actively practice their art. All applicants have maintained a professional practice for no more than 10 years prior to the date of application.

Application Guidelines:

To download the complete guidelines for the RBC Award for Glass or the Winifred Shantz Award for Ceramics, visit www.theclayandglass.ca/awards. In order to be considered, applications for either award must be received electronically by Monday, September 14, 2015.

About the Awards:

The RBC Award for Glass is supported by RBC as part of the RBC Emerging Artists Project. The Winifred Shantz Award for Ceramics is supported by the Keith and Winifred Shantz Fund for the Arts, held at The Kitchener and Waterloo Community Foundation.

Past recipients of both awards truly represent the best of the emerging ceramic and glass artists in Canada. Christopher Reid Flock of Hamilton, Ontario was the winner of the 2014 Winifred Shantz Award for Ceramics. Cheryl Wilson Smith of Red Lake, Ontario was the winner of the 2014 RBC Award for Glass.

KOFFLER GALLERY
Erratics
Martha Baillie | Malka Greene with Alan Resnick

April 16 – June 14, 2015 | Curator: Mona Filip

Featuring installations by Toronto author Martha Baillie and artist/curator Malka Greene with writer Alan Resnick, Erraticsexplores the tensions between memory and fiction, bringing together two archives where photography takes a central role in an attempt to uncover hidden narratives. Staged as museological displays conveying two personal stories, these collections of images, texts and records reveal both the impossibility of fully knowing the past and the effectiveness of literary imagination in grappling with history. A Featured Exhibition in the 2015 CONTACT Photography Festival.

BLACKWOOD GALLERY, UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO MISSISSAUGA
Sameer Farooq & Mirjam Linschooten, Artists-in-Residence

Residency: May 11 – June 14, 2015
Exhibition: June 14 – August 2, 2015

Talk with artists Sameer Farooq & Mirjam Linschooten

Artists-in-Residence Sameer Farooq and Mirjam Linschooten will talk about their exhibition in progress, which will take a step back from specific objects on display to reveal a complex space of social codes, ideological agendas, and decisions. Instead, the artists are assigning value to the places inside of the museum where an object is held: the vitrine, the plinth, the wall, the archival photograph, etc. These models of display provide a valuable glimpse into tactics of representation: the ideas and values of the exhibition’s arrangers, claims about what a cultural group is and ought to be, protocols of approaching an object, and an image of who the intended viewer is. Through a rigorous analysis of exhibition installations Farooq and Linschooten aim to observe the way knowledge is displayed, asking: What gets lost in the capture? And, Who is on display?

ART GALLERY OF YORK UNIVERSITY (AGYU)
Rashaad Newsome: Silence Please, the Show is About to Begin
April 8 – June 14, 2015

Tour of exhibition by curator Suzanne Carte

Rashaad Newsome’s first Canadian exhibition, Silence Please, the Show is About to Begin, features recent video, performance, and collage works by this New York-based artist that explode constructions of gender, race, and class. With big, bright, and bold compositions, Newsome’s work bursts with light and colour; images drip with gold chains, diamond rings, and jewel studs. Through sampling, clashing, and choreographing the iconic works of hip-hop artists and the legendary moves of ballroom superstars with motifs from Baroque architecture, images of European heraldry, and tales from medieval poems, Newsome boldly proclaims a new vision of blackness and queerness.
