Open Studio's Artist Proof Sale Opening Party! December 1

November 20, 2016 by Jen Pilles in Event

Opening Night Party: Thursday, December 1, 6:00 to 9:00 pm, FREE ADMISSION
Sale continues Friday, December 2 through Friday, December 23, Tuesday - Saturday, 12:00 to 5:00 pm.

Open Studio’s Artist Proof Sale is an excellent way to kickstart or build a growing art collection. And you can do it without breaking your holiday budget! Hundreds of original works of art, including screenprints, etchings, lithographs and relief prints are available by established and emerging artists from around the country—priced from just $50-$400.

The opening night party features:

  • Original, one-of-a-kind fine art prints, ranging from $50 - $400, by established and emerging artists.
  • Food, cash bar and festivities
  • An artwork by artist Dave Dyment commissioned especially for the event — limited edition prints will be printed live and available for sale that night.
  • Limited edition, original, handmade artists’ greeting cards—our new annual range of cards will be launched during the event.

The Artist Proof Sale is an important fundraiser for Open Studio— 50% of the sale price of each print goes to the artist and 50% goes to support Open Studio’s charitable programming, which includes exhibitions, talks, education and residencies. With each purchase you make, you get an original work of art at a reasonable price, while supporting contemporary Canadian artists and a vital Canadian cultural resource.

This event is an excellent opportunity for those who are looking to start or add to their art collections and for those who are looking for original holiday gift ideas or who prefer to shop locally.

This is always a popular and busy event, with fierce competition for some works, so come early — once a piece is sold, it’s gone! The sale continues to Saturday, December 23rd in our galleries (regular hours: Tuesday – Saturday, 12-5 pm) and online.

The University of Waterloo Master of Fine Arts Now Accepting Applications for Fall 2017

November 20, 2016 by Jen Pilles in Education

Intense and intimate—pursue your MFA at the University of Waterloo. Fully funded Keith and Win Shantz International Research Scholarships let you study with professional artists anywhere in the world for six weeks. With a generous funding package, plenty of access to faculty and resources, a solo exhibition in our nationally renowned gallery UWAG, a robust visiting artist program, and teaching placements, the University of Waterloo is a real gem.

A key feature of the program is the Keith and Win Shantz International Research Scholarships, which enable all MFA candidates to travel and study alongside a professional artist during their summer term. Our students have been to the Netherlands, England, Germany, Spain, Scotland, Denmark, Brazil, China, and the United States. To find out more from our 2016 scholarship recipients see this year’s Shantz Shorts: Jess Lincoln, Denise St. Marie and Timothy Walker, and Alexis Hildreth.

The University of Waterloo is one of the leading comprehensive universities in the country and has been recognized by Maclean’s magazine as Canada’s top university for innovation for the 23rd consecutive year.

Their MFA is an intimate program built around studio research, practice, professional development, and pedagogical training. Studio work culminates in a solo exhibition at the University of Waterloo Art Gallery (UWAG); see past thesis exhibitions here. The pedagogical component includes a seminar in course development, two teaching assistantships and the opportunity to teach an introductory, studio-based course.

Due to their size, teaching assistantships and the Shantz International Research Scholarships, they offer one of the most generous funding packages in the country.

The application deadline for the MFA program is February 1, 2017.

BAYAN / exhibition at A Space Gallery

November 14, 2016 by Jen Pilles

Bayan'
Artists: Kwentong Bayan (Althea Balmes of Akin Lansdowne + Jo SiMalaya Alcampo), Hector Barretto Calma, Jaret Vadera
Essay by: Kim Abis
Location: A Space Gallery
Exhibition dates: November 18 - December 17, 2016
Opening Reception: Friday November 18 6 - 9pm:

     Panel Discussion 6 – 7 pm
     Performances 7 – 8 pm
     Reception 8 – 9 pm
Performances by: Pantayo, Anakbayan, and Caregiver Connections Education & Support Organization (CCESO)

The exhibition, Bayan, reveals the evolution and multiple meanings of the word bayan itself as it manifests in the cultural practice in the Philippines and in the diaspora. Bayan, which can refer to the actual archipelago of 7,100 islands, also refers to the nation of the people itself, including the over 10 million Filipinx living outside the country. It is precisely because of its fluidity, yet all-encompassing nature, that the term BAYAN is the short name for the umbrella organization of the sectoral Philippine national democratic organizations all over the world.

The works of Hector Calma, Jaret Vadera and Kwentong Bayan, combine to reveal bayan in various ways, giving us the opportunity to trace its mutations in particular political and geographical contexts.
The most significant of these political contexts is that the archipelago is in fact home to the longest-running communist insurgency in Asia. This year, 2016, marks the 50 year anniversary of the Cultural Revolution, and its persistence in breathing life into various liberation struggles worldwide cannot be denied. Bayan pays homage to the cultural workers who have come before us, who have shown us how to hold the pen like a proper cadre would.

"Akin Collective ... is the best suited to the creative activation of dormant commercial space" - NetGain

November 09, 2016 by Jen Pilles
"First, is the existence of artist’s collectives. These are self-organizing groups that form to achieve shared objectives, such as the acquisition and operation of expensive equipment, joint marketing or exhibiting initiatives, or the lease and management of shared work space.  Of these, Akin Collective in Toronto's West End is the best suited to the creative activation of dormant commercial space."

Akin presents the Akin Vitrine Gallery featuring Paper Bag Beers

November 02, 2016 by Jen Pilles in Event

Akin Collective + Akin Projects are excited to present the Vitrine Gallery, a recent addition to our Dupont studios. This miniature gallery will feature the diverse talent of our members with a new installation each month.

Our new exhibition features the collaborative work of Akin members, Erin Enns and Shanna Van Maurik (AKA: Paper Bag Beers) and runs for the month of November.

Paper bag beers is a Toronto-based collaborative composed of two extraterrestrial rainbow children, Erin Enns and Shanna Van Maurik. Since 2013, they have been creating work together and sharing their love for the kind of colours that hurt your eyes. Enns' background is in illustration and design and Van Maurik's is in fine art, and painting. The combination of their two distinct styles creates work that falls somewhere in between fairy tale illustrations and dystopian toxic wastescapes. They illuminate planets unseen by the human eye, sometimes showcasing the creatures that inhabit them.

Exhibition includes two hanging pieces, Scumland Lazy River and Crusty Junk Caverns, both gouache on panel, 24x24” and a sculptural element titled, Bubblegum Valley Install.

The Akin Vitrine Gallery is located at the Clock Factory Building at 1485 Dupont Street (entrance on Campbell Avenue). Find Akin Studio 215 on the second floor and follow the sign into the hallway around the corner.

The building is open from 9am to 6pm, Monday to Friday, or to arrange a viewing outside of those hours please contact the artists: erin@entro.com and shannavanmaurik@gmail.com.
